Yesterday I attended the 34th annual Pettengill Farm Day at the Pettengill Farm in Freeport, Maine. We lucked out with the weather--Saturday turned rainy, and Saturday night turned out to be a stormy mess! But Sunday dawned with just fog and later cleared enough to give families enough courage to attend the festivities.
Despite the weather and a few last minute cancellations, we had plenty of farm animals (Belted Galway cattle and two beautiful Alpacas), as well as several master craftsmen demonstrating their skills. We had a Recollections Tent for oral histories, and a reading tent for the kids. Norm Buttrick had a great archeology tent and there was an assortment of vintage farm equipment loaned by a local collector. The apple trees provided plenty of fodder for the cider press and the popular apple hucking.....Of course, the highlight of the day for me was the tours of the early 1800s saltbox farmhouse on the site. Student volunteers from the Freeport High School were the tour guides, and they did a great job introducing the house and the sgrafitti marine images to the many visitors.
